What is Diabetes? Diabetes is a disorder characterized by hyperglycemia or elevated blood glucose (blood sugar). Our bodies function best at a certain level of sugar in the bloodstream. If the amount of sugar in our blood runs too high or too low, then we typically feel bad. Diabetes is the name of the condition where the blood sugar level consistently runs too high. It is the most common endocrine disorder. African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans have a higher rate of developing diabetes during their lifetime. Diabetes has potential long term complications that can affect the kidneys, eyes, heart, blood vessels and nerves. Diabetes is divided into two major subgroups: Type 1 diabetes - much less common than Type 2 Diabetes and typically affects younger individuals. Type 1 usually begins before age 40 although there are exceptions. It is associated with a deficiency (or lack) of insulin. Without sufficient insulin, the blood glucose rises to levels which can cause some of the common symptoms of hyperglycemia. Nearly 6 million people in the US have it and are not aware of it. In Type II Diabetes, the body produces insulin, but it is either not enough or the body's cells have become insulin resistant. In other words, the body does not use the insulin that is being produced. People with type 2 diabetes can develop hyperglycemic hyperosmolar nonketotic syndrome. It can be precipitated by steroids and stress. Type 2 should not be treated lightly... If not properly treated, type 2 diabetes can lead to complications like blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, and nerve damage. Type 2 Diabetes Symptoms Sometimes, people with Type II diabetes don't notice any symptoms or the symptoms are experienced gradually. They include:
